Upright bikes come in all kinds of shapes and forms despite there being one fairly standardized design. Schwinn AirDyne Pro may not look like a normal bike, but it is one of the most capable upright bikes you can get at the moment. Today we are going to take a closer look and find out why this thing is more than just a lower body fitness machine. If you are looking for a single piece of workout equipment that can cover all of your needs, this just might be it. Lets get started.
Design of the Schwinn AirDyne Pro reveals its unique nature. Schwinn didn’t hide the main components by putting them in a plastic enclosure. Granted, the bike probably wouldn’t work all that well if they did. What we have here is a very flashy, incredibly well made upright bike that uses a slightly different type of mechanism to provide resistance. The frame is a beefy piece of metal that is reinforced in a variety of ways. It looks like a regular street bike’s frame but much stronger. The seat is mounted in a way that allows it to be adjusted both vertically and horizontally, thus giving you enough room to find that perfect seating position. Seat itself is fairly comfortable compared to most. We have an ergonomic contour that is padded with the type of material which greatly reduces fatigue. One of the biggest differences between this bike and other upright bikes is the lack of static handles. As we are about to find out, there’s a good reason for that.
At the beginning of this review, we have mentioned that Schwinn AirDyne Pro uses a different mechanism to provide resistance. There is no heavy metal flywheel to push. Instead, we have a drive system that comprises of a small flywheel and a large custom fan in the front. As you turn the pedals, you also turn the fan which then creates resistance. One good thing about this system is the fact that there are no adjustable resistance levels. Instead, resistance increases as you increase the intensity of the workout. Handles on this bike are actually an upper body exercise tool, which you can use if you want. Control unit is pretty impressive with a dual display design and plenty of features. One display is your standard stats display while the other is a full blown odometer. There are several built in programs and other user defined presets you can access. Despite how odd this bike may look to you, this is actually a tool used by professional athletes on a daily basis.
Schwinn AirDyne Pro is a good alternative to classic upright bikes for a number of reasons. For one, it is perfect for high intensity exercises. That might make it seem like a bike only experienced and very fit people can use, but that is not the case. On the contrary, the whole fan drive system makes it much easier on beginners because the resistance is more or less equal to the input power. In other words, if you want to go light on it, you can. But you can also push the limits of your body should you want to.
